Play stopped due to poor light, Bangladesh lead by 106 runs
MIRPUR — Play was stopped due to poor light on the third day of the Test between Bangladesh and West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, with the hosts reaching 79 for 6 in their second innings, a lead of 106 runs. Bangladesh have four wickets in hand and two days of the match remain. Rain had earlier forced an early tea interval on the same day, trimming the overs available in the third day's play.
Look beneath the surface and the 106-run lead is not as commanding as it sounds. It is built on a slender 27-run first-innings advantage and on a second innings that had collapsed to 34 for 4 by the 11th over. The match report itself concedes that at one stage it appeared Bangladesh might not even manage a 100-run lead. The hosts are ahead, but they are not in control.
West Indies' first innings matters because it ended in a heap rather than a fight. Tagenarine Chanderpaul made 56 off 184 balls, including six fours and one six, meaning roughly 54 per cent of his runs came in boundaries at a strike rate of about 30. Justin Greaves made 46 off 103 balls with only two fours, and the pair put on 65. Greaves was dropped by Mominul Haque and was then trapped leg before by off spin. After that the lower order fell away: Bishop 15, Joseph 4, Warrican 0 and Seales 0. Three of the last four wickets produced just four, zero and zero.
The Mirpur surface once again proved it is built for spin. Eight of West Indies' ten wickets went to spinners, and after lunch Bangladesh bowled the bulk of their overs through two off-spinners. That is the hosts' clearest structural advantage in this match, because West Indies batters' struggles against spin in Asian conditions are a familiar story.
The most durable achievement of the innings belonged to Naeem Hasan, who became the fastest Bangladesh bowler to 50 Test wickets. He took four wickets in the innings, but three of those were lower-order batters, which makes the figures more about closing an innings than breaking it open. The harder work, containing Chanderpaul and Greaves, was shared by Shariful and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Miraz and Taijul Islam took two wickets each, while Hasan Mahmud and Shariful took one apiece. That distribution shows a spin system at work, not a one-man attack. The record itself is real, but the label of frontline spinner should wait for data from away conditions.
Bangladesh's top-order failure in the second innings was not a one-off. Tanzid Hasan Tamim made seven in the first innings and returned without scoring in the second. The manner of his dismissal raises a technical concern: attempting to flick a full-length ball on leg stump, he was caught at gully, where a fielder was stationed. Sadman Islam, despite a century in the first innings, could manage only 13 in the second, and Towhid Hridoy, after 42 in the first innings, failed to open his account. Hridoy's dismissal was plainly a pressure shot, a mistimed big hit that ballooned to mid-on.
A further concern for the hosts is the injury to Mominul Haque. He was struck on the head while fielding and was replaced by Jaker Ali as a concussion substitute. Under the rules the replacement must be like-for-like and can only take the field after the match referee's approval. Jaker Ali is a wicketkeeper-batter while Mominul is a specialist batter, so the substitution is plausibly compliant, but this is exactly the situation in which the competitive-advantage debate arises, because the team gains a second keeping option. The match referee's reasoning has not been made public, so the question cannot be closed from here.
Weather has also intervened. Rain came first and poor light followed on the same day, disrupting play twice. Unlike limited-overs cricket, Tests have no Duckworth-Lewis-Stern target revision; the only consequence is lost time and lost overs, which naturally raises the probability of a draw. With two days left a result is the likeliest outcome, but given the weather a three-way possibility cannot be dismissed.
The equation ahead is straightforward. If Bangladesh's last four wickets add 40 to 70 runs, West Indies will face a target of roughly 145 to 180. On a Day-4 and Day-5 surface offering turn, against three spinners, that target is competitive but not safe. West Indies, for their part, will need one substantial partnership and a cheap dismissal of the Bangladesh tail. This third-day snapshot can change within hours, so every figure should be read against an official scorecard.
